How to the define how powerful should be my log splitter?
Log splitters’ force is measured by Tonnage (5 Ton, 10 Ton, 20 Ton…), what represent the weight we’d need to place over the log to split it (instead of hitting it with an axe). When we use a 5 Ton log splitter it is like we place 10,000 pounds over the log to make it split.
OK but… how much Tons do I need to split my logs?
Considering you are going to split seasoned logs, the Tonnage (force) needed to split the logs is basically determined by two factors:
1) Tree’s hardness (Softwood or Hardwood?);
2) Logs’ thickness.
It happens because each different tree species may have different hardnesses and, also, the thicker is log, stronger it will be. I’ve cut and split wood to heat my house for 20 years. I’ve split with axes, mauls, wedges, electric splitters, hydraulic splitters, you name it, I’ve done it. This machine is the best splitting machine I have ever used. I’ve split about 2 cords since I got it, and I am convinced that this is the way I will split wood ’til I can’t split no more. I’m 61, so I’m hoping to get 20 more years in. Maybe 30.

This splitter is great! Two men can split 1 cord in two hours on 1/2 tank of gas. We are regularly doing 2 cords in 4 hrs on a full tank. Also, it does as good on tough burls as some 60 ton hydraulics I have used!

Excellent machine. Fun to use and amazingly efficient. Had a little trouble on a couple of tough logs with the machine binding up. Took some creativity and a chainsaw to break it loose. The paper work should say more about how to deal with this. Turn the machine off so the belt I think doesn’t get hot and work the log loose. The ram will then retract. If the log appears to be a tough one, quickly release the ram before it gets to it’s fully extended position. Do this however many times it takes to get through the piece, Usually not more than 1 or 2 times. This will avoid the ram binding up.

I READ ALL THE REVIEWS ABOUT THE DELIVERY, THE ASSEMBLY, THE LACK OF INSTRUCTIONS. THESE ARE NOT THINGS A DIY PERSON SHOULD WORRY ABOUT. THE REVEIW THAT SAID THIS MACHINE WAS A BEAST, IS THE MOST ACCURATE. I HAVE DONE FIVE CORDS OF WOOD, IN LESS THAN A WEEK. THE MACHINE SPLIT EVERYTHING. I PUT IN OIL AND GOOD GAS, PULLED IT A FEW TIMES AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP. RAN IT OUT OF GAS, FILLED IT UP, AND IT STILL STARTED WITH JUST A FEW PULLS. THE KOEHLER ENGINE RUNS GREAT. I USE A SPRAY ON PROTECTIVE WHITE LITHIUM GREASE ON THE RAIL AND IN THE LUBRICATION POINT. THE WOOD WAS CUT DOWN NINE MONTHS AGO. SOME PIECES STILL HAVE SAP RUNNING OUT. THE PICTURES SHOW A LOG SIXTEEN INCHES LONG AND TWENTY THREE INCHES TALL. SPLIT RIGHT IN HALF WITH ONE TRY. ALL OF THE NUTS AND BOLTS ARE STILL TIGHT AND NOTHING IS MISSING. POWER KING HAS INFORMED ME THAT HOME DEPOT HAS NOT UPDATED THEIR INFO. THEY DO COME WITH THE SEVEN HP MOTOR NOT THE SIX AND A HALF HP MOTOR. THERE IS ONLY ONE CONTROL LEVER, NOT TWO. IF YOU ARE CAREFUL AND PAY ATTENTION YOU SHOULD BE FINE. HOME DEPOT HAD THE BEST PRICE AND THE DELIVERY WENT GREAT. GO BUY ONE FOR YOURSELF, CAUSE I AM NOT SELLING MINE.
