Manuals and Informational User Documents:
How to the define how powerful should be my log splitter?
Log splitters’ force is measured by Tonnage (5 Ton, 10 Ton, 20 Ton…), what represent the weight we’d need to place over the log to split it (instead of hitting it with an axe). When we use a 5 Ton log splitter it is like we place 10,000 pounds over the log to make it split.
OK but… how much Tons do I need to split my logs?
Considering you are going to split seasoned logs, the Tonnage (force) needed to split the logs is basically determined by two factors:
1) Tree’s hardness (Softwood or Hardwood?);
2) Logs’ thickness.
It happens because each different tree species may have different hardnesses and, also, the thicker is log, stronger it will be. So, to be sure that your log splitter will be able to split your logs, before taking the decision of which model you’ll be, we strongly recommend you to check on the table below what’s the Tonnage you’ll need, based on your Tree’s hardness and logs’ thickness.
Tree | Wood Type | 6 inches | 12 inches | 18 inches | 24 inches |
---|
Aspen | Softwood | 4 ton | 12 ton | 20 ton | 27 ton |
Spruce | Softwood | 4 ton | 12 ton | 20 ton | 27 ton |

I just got this and have only put about a 1/2 cord through it so far. I’m in New Mexico and most of the wood we get is 10-12 in and not much hard wood but I did have some 20′ rounds from last year. The splitter went through the 10-12 with the 4-way wedge very good but, I would recommend not going any bigger then that as the wedge tends to move upwards and may damage the primary wedge if your not careful but I am happy I got it for the type of wood I’m getting here. I tried the 20in logs with some success but had to go around the log chipping small pieces at a time which took a long time and you would get the wedge stuck in the wood a lot and would have to stop and knock it off and turn the machine off and then restart it
again so it would take about 30 minutes to get it done and I would be straining the machine but don’t get me wrong I’m happy with the machine but, I think anyone thinking of getting this should keep in mind that the manufacturer states the biggest logs that this machine can do is 20.5 and 10.5 in diameter and thats what I think. If I were doing larger rounds 20 plus or more I wouldn’t get this machine I would get a 16 ton and go through them fast and easy so of the other reviews are saying that this goes right through 20plus in logs I don’t think so unless you’re splitting popular wood or something like that with out any knots, the the big rounds that I was trying to split wasn’t even hard wood . This log splitter is for smaller logs up to 12in just like the manufacturer says. The package came very quick 3 days. 4 stars for now but, will update in the future when I can tell if it lasts and if it’s durable. I hope this was helpful to some people thinking of buying this machine.

We just moved to our cabin in the woods, and firewood is now a must have. I began researching log splitters for months before we decided to purchase this one. I watched several videos and this one had many features I liked over the others, such as the auto return handle. I also purchased the extended legs for it and used it to split all of our wood for this winter. This machine worked flawlessly all summer. I threw some big logs at it and it chewed right through 90% of them, with only a few twisted and knotty ones having issues. And when I say big ones, I mean really big ones. Like if I could lift it, I tried it, and usually split it. I’m not telling anyone else to do this, as I was very careful to listen to the strain of the motor, and knew when to back off if necessary, but I was still taking a chance on breaking it. Season two starts in a few months, and I’m sure it will perform as wonderfully as it did last season.

I just bought the Boss Splitter a few weeks ago. I live in the mountains in CA and the drought and bark beetles are killing millions of trees here right now. I had to have a 250 foot pine tree cut down because the bark beetles got it. The logs that I have been splitting are very green and full of water. The largest log that the splitter has gone through so far is one that was 16 inches long and 22 inches round and the boss went right though it without any problem. I have split about 30 logs so far all of them were 16 inches long and the circumference varied from 17 round all the way up to 22 inches round. The boss has handled all of these logs without any problem. I have also used the splitter to split kindling all the way down to 1/2 inch wide pieces. I use cedar as my kindling because it splits really good!

I had some oak and pine logs that needed splitting. After doing a lot of research on gas powered or electric powered units, I bought this splitter and also a 25′ extension cord which I plugged into my deck outlet. I’ve never used a splitter before, so I have nothing to compare it to. However, this little machine worked great. Each cut takes about 10 seconds as the movable piece pushes the log against the axe head. I was afraid it would be very noisy and bother my neighbors, but it’s not loud at all. It’s slightly louder than an outside air conditioning condenser unit. The instructions say you need ear mufflers, but you don’t. It comes fully assembled except for a screw-on knob/lever that you push down to engage the mechanism.
It stands up straight for storage after you remove the knob/lever on the back–which would get crushed if you stand it up without removing it. I keep it standing up in the yard with a black contractor bag over it. You can haul it around on its wheels with the front handle, but it’s heavy for a woman to pull around. A woman can move it, though it would be easier to have two women, one on each side of the machine, holding opposite sides of the handle, to move it a long distance. I love this machine and my friends are envious.

So far this splitter works great. I bought it partially because of the stand and the trays. It does exactly what I had hoped for. Currently I am splitting log already stacked in the wood shed. I can split the logs and stack in new area with minimal bending, very important as I have a bad back. Not having to pull start is a big plus as well. Had some problem with actually getting it as it was on back order.

This machine works. Love the bidirectional splitting system. Saves time on the return by cutting from either direction.
